1928 graduate Faculty Oriental Studies, Centr Asian University. 1932 completed postgraduate studies at Institute of Language and Logic, USSR Academy of Sciences.
1928-1938 assist professor, then associate professor, Eastern Institute, Leningrad. Later professor, higher educational establishments in Leningrad and Tashkent. From 1934 held posts of senior associate and head, Centr Asian Office and deputy director, Institute of Oriental Studies.
Senior associate, Altay Languages Section and deputy director, Institute of Linguistics, USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1958 also Bureau member. Department of Lit and Language, USSR Academy of Sciences.
Specialized in Turkic languages and lit. Helped to devise alphabets and orthographic systems for Uzbek, Uygur, Karachay-Balkar and other Turkic languages. Also collaborated on grammatical, lexicological and dialectological textbooks for these languages.
Compiled and edited Uzbek-Russian and Russian-Uzbek dictionaries. Pubbl: Uchebnik uygurskogo yazyka (An Uygur Textbook) (1935). Ocherki karachayevobalkarskoy grammatiki (An Outline Grammar of Karachay-Balkar) (1935).
Uzbekskiy literatumyy yazyk v period 1905-1917 (Literary Uzbek from 1905 to 1917) (1941). Grammatika uzbekskogo yazyka (An Uzbek Grammar) (1943). Ocherki po istorii uzbekskogo yazyka (An Outline History of Uzbek) (2vol, 1948), etc.
