1912 passed master’s examinations and two years later began lecturing at Moscow University. From 1918 professor, from 1923 head Department of Geography, Moscow University.
Concentrated on relief of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Led research expedition in Moscow area, southern Bug Basin, southern (Bash) Ural region and elsewhere. Determined contemporary features and developmental stages of moraine surfacesof Russian plains, with special attention to the relief of the "secondary moraine plains”.
Studied development of asymmetry of valleys in plains, rivers and watersheds according to geological, climatic and other conditions (Borzov’s Rule): also examined the possiblility of determining the age of the relief from the degree of development of the deluvian layers. First to undertake a systematic geomorphological survey of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Using the Moscow area as an example, he established the standard for geomorpholigical maps.
Published the first monograph on the relief of the European Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Founded a sci school of geomorphologists. Designed methods of mapping remote regions.
Edited a number of maps, including the "Large Soviet Atlas of the World”. Devised first Soviet visual aids for the teaching of geography in secondary schools. Together with Doctorate. North. Anuchnin organized Geographical Research Institute at Moscow University and a geographical studies museum.
