Studied under Professor K. Everardi at the Moscow Conservatory.
1889 began stage career at the Kiev Opera House. Until 1900 sang in various opera and operetta enterprises in Tiflis, Yekaterinoslav, Khar’kov, Nizhniy Novgorod, Kazan’, etc. 1900-1917 soloist, St. Petersburg Mariinskiy Theater.
From 1917 specialized exclusively in chamber singing. Possessed a mcllow- timbred voice and a perfect command of musical phrasing. 1924 lost his hearing, left the stage and went abroad.
1934 stage director, Paris Opera ensemble with which Chaliapin was singing. 1935 returned to USSR. From 1936 worked at evening singing school of Kirov Opera and Ballet Theater.
Roles: German in Pikovaya datna (The Queen of Spades). Siegfried, Loki and Mime in Wagner’s "Ring des Nibelungen”. Kanio, Jose and Sinodal.
Title role in Napravnik’s opera Dubrovskiy, etc.
