Aleksandr Esenin-Volpin, USSR Dissident, mathematician.


Esenin-Volpin, Aleksandr was born in 1925 in Moscow. Son of the poet S. Esenin.


Arrested in 1949 for antiSoviet propaganda, and sent to a psychiatric hospital. In the late 1950s, became one of the leaders of the dissident movement, stressing the legality of their demands, and urging the authorities ‘to respect their own laws’. Several terms in psychiatric hospitals in Leningrad and Moscow.

Emigrated to the West, 1972. Settled in the USA and retired from political activity.
