Before graduate engaged in revol work, for which he was exiled. Contributed to Party organs Molodaya Rossiya and Golos molodoy Rossii. Delegation, 4th Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress.
1918 gave up Party political work. From 1920 professor and director, Ural Mining Institute. From 1926 professor, Moscow Mining Academy.
1930-1948 professor, Moscow Mining Institute. From 1930 also professor, Moscow Geological Survey Institute. From 1944 member, Indiana Mining Section, Council of Sciences and Technical Expertise, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics State Planning Committee.
From 1954 pensioner; 1908 began geological field trips. Took part in Donbas survey. 1914 did field research in Kuznetsk coal basin.
Established that the Karaganda coal deposits were the largest in the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Also studied coal deposits in Northeast Kaz, Sakhalin, the Caucasus, Urals and Centr Asia. 1924 advocated survey and opencast mining of the lower formations of the Bogoslov lignite deposit.
Made valuable contributions to the industry evaluation of coal deposits throughout the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Did important work on the classification of reserves of coal and other solid minerals.
Religion discourages exploration of science and universe by suppressing curiosity, and denies its followers a broader perspective.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
