Member, Commission for the Study of Natural Resources, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1885, together with Agricultural Engineer Kessler designed original equipment for fractional distillation at reduced pressure. Did research on the properties of concrete.
Devised methods of obtaining hydrogen under field conditions by the reaction of a caustic soda solution with aluminum or silicon and the reaction of water with calcium hydride. 1904-1905 the first of these methods was used during the Russo-Japanese War. Designed smoke-pots for military use.
1907-1910, together with V.F. Mitkevich, built first Russian installation for obtaining nitric acid from air by the arc method.
