1896 graduate Vyatka junior college.
1896 went to Odessa; tramped through Russia, worked as seaman, fisherman, gold-prospector in the Urals, soldier. In the army joined Social-Democratic Party. Deserted from the army.
Conducted revol work among seamen and soldiers in Sevastopol’. Jailed several times. Three times exiled; from 1912 in St. Petersburg.
1924 moved to Feodosiya. 1930 to Staryy Krym; his first story', a propaganda pamphlet signed A. S. G., Zasluga ryadovogo Panteleyeva (Private Panteleyev’s Service) (1906) was confiscated and burned by the Secret Polit Police Department. The second story V Italiyu (To Italy) (1906) was signed A. M-v.
The next - Apel'siny (Oranges) (1908) was for the first time signed A. S. Grin (an abbreviation of the author's name). At that time the author was an escaped convict and as such was wanted by the Secret Polit Police Department. By the time of 1917 October Revol he was an acknowledged writer with numerous novelettes to his credit.
His stories, novels and novelettes are imbued with romantic attitude. Excellent at landscape descriptions and a fine psychologist. By the force of his imagination he lent life to non-existant countries and cities, strange events and characters.
His rare gift of romantic phantasy distinguished him from most Soviet writers. Did not belong to any lit groupings. His novelette Alyye parusa (Red Sails) was the basis for a ballet and film of the same name (1961).
Many of his works have been translated into for languages.
