1897-1901 associate, 1901-1922 director, Gynecological Clinic, Moscow University. 1910 published classic manual on operative gynecology and the principles of abdominal surgery. Devised several gynecological and urological operations, including a radical operation for cancer of the womb, an extraperitoneal approach to pelvic abscesses, a method of suturing the ureter and an operation without preliminary tying-off of the blood vessels.
Developed a number of gynecological instruments, including a cervical expander, a diagnostic trocar, an infusion cannula and a special curet. Did research on the clinical anatomy of the female pelvis, classified the pelvic cellular tissue and lymphatic system and studied the propagation of infections and malignant diseases. 1897 read paper on his radical operation for cancer of the womb, which anticipated the method of the Viennese gynecologist East.
