1890-1901 astronomer, 1919-1930 director, Pulkovo Observatory. 1901-1911 inspector, Main Board of Weights and Measures. 1932-1938 deputy director, All-Union Research Institute of Metrology.
Research concerned latitude changes of Pulkovo Observatory. Developed theory of the Earth’s shape and the distribution of gravity upon its surface. Research work on celestial mechanics dealt with the motion of small planets and comets.
Taught a number of university courses on the main branches of astronomy. 1906-1910 and 1913 chairman, Russian Astronomers’ Social.
Correspondent member, USSR Academy of Sciences from 1925.
