1904 graduate Moscow Arts Theater School (class of V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko).
From 1904 actor and stage director, Meycrhold Ensemble in Tiflis. 1905-1906 actor; Studio on Povarskaya (run by Stanislavskiy and Meycrhold). 1908-1917 with various theaters in Voronezh, Rostovon-Don, Taganrog, Samara, Kazan’, Orenburg, Irkutsk, Odessa, Astrakhan'.
From 1917 in Saratov. 1920 organized a youth troupe at Saratov’s Karl Marx Theater. Artistic director with theaters in Ashkhabad (1927-1929), Penza (1929-1930), Samara (1930-1931), Voronezh (1931-1934), Kursk (1934-1941), Engel’s (1941-1943), Kurgan (1943-1946), Ulan-Ude (1946-1947), Velikiye Luki (1947-1948).
From 1948 chief stage director, Ryazan’ theater. Produced almost all of Gorky's plays. Founded and taught at theater studios in Saratov, Kiev, Samara, Penza, Voronezh and Kursk.
The Kursk Studio was named for him.
Communist Party member from 1950.
