From 1869 junior sci assistant, Department of Geology and Geognosy, 1877-1896 professor of geology. Mining Institute, Saint St. Petersburg. 1882 helped found, 1885-1903 directed, Geological Committee, Academy of Sciences.
1899-1936 president, Mineralogical Social of Russia and then of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Foreign many years headed Geological Section, Leningrad Social of Naturalists. May 1916 - May 1917 acting viccpres, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Attended many international geological congresses. 1897 chairman, Organization(s) Committee and president, 7th session, International Geological Congress in Saint St. Petersburg. Model research on tectonics and paleography of the European Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
Extensive research on geological surveying, stratigraphy, paleontology, tectonics, mineralogy and petrography of ferrous and non-ferrous deposits. Compiled summary geological maps of the Urals and the European Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Originally specialized in petrography.
From 1880 concentrated on geology and paleontology. From 1910 worked on fossils. His works on tectonics and paleogcography are especially well known.
First to propose now accepted theory on structure of the Russian Platform.
