From 1897 in Russian Army. Fought in 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War and in World War 1. From 1918 in Red Army.
1918-1919 chief of staff Eastern Front; 1919-1920 commander, Volga Military district. 1920-1921 Soviet military attache in Lithuania.
1921-1924 head, Operations Board, Red Army Staff. From 1924 taught and did research at Frunze Military Academy, where he headed the Department of Military History.
