1912-1916 studied at Saint St. Petersburg Power Engineer Institute, then at Petrograd University.
Worked for Saint St. Petersburg Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Committee. 1916 drafted into Russian Army and trained at ensigns’ school. From March 1918 member, Revol Committee and comissar for artillery inspection, 8th Army.
From April 1918 commanded 4th Army, then assistant commander, 5th Donetsk Army. From November 1918 head, Military Control Department, 10th Army. 1919 for a while secretary, Collegium, Ukraine People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs.
Member Ukraine Central Executive Committee.
