Fought in Russo-Japanese War: lectured on tactics and strategy at General Staff Academy. From 1908 professor, General Staff Academy. During World War 1 commanded infantry regt, then quartermaster-general, 7th Army on Rumanian Front.
From July 1918 in Red Army. 1918-1922 department head, Military Communications Board. Professor, Engineer Academy.
Member, Commission to Study the Experience of World War 1 and the Civil War. From 1922 lectured on strategy at Red Army Military Academy (now Frunze Military Academy). Senior lecturer, Engineer Academy and Engineer Technical Academy.
