Joined the Red Army, 1919, and the Bolshevik Party, 1920. Took part in the Civil War. Took part in the Soviet-Finnish war, as chief-of-staff of the air force at the Northwestern front.
During World War II Commander of the Air Force at the Leningrad front. Deputy Minister of Defence for the Air Force. Arrested 1946, together with the aviation minister, Shakhurin, after Stalin’s son, Vasilii, complained at Potsdam to his father that American planes were better than Soviet planes.
Beria tried to use his confessions, obtained by torture, against Zhukov. Released from the Gulag after Stalin’s death, and resumed his air-force career. Commander of Strategic Aviation, 1953-1956.
