Head of GPU operations in Western Europe in the 1930s. Sent as GPU chief to Spain during the Civil War. In 1938, ordered by Stalin to return to the USSR. Defected to Paris, and moved to the USA. Lived with his family in seclusion in Cleveland until the moment of Stalin’s death, when he published in the American press some information on Stalin’s crimes, while not giving away much about his own contributions to GPU operations abroad.
