From 1896 studied al Drama School, Moscow Theatrical College.
1895 stage debut with A. M. Medvedev’s company in Voronezh. From 1898 actor, Maly Theater (1901-1902 season acted at Korsh Theater). Studied under leading singers, including Chaliapin.
Continued to act despite progressive deafness (1910 finally lost his hearing) and devised various techniques which enabled him to pick up his cues and continue on the stage. Roles: Alyosha in Deti Vanyushina (Vanyushin’s Children). Romeo in “Romeo and Juliet” (1901).
