1884 defended doctor's thesis on medullary tumors and giant cells. From 1885 associate professor, Chair of Pathological Anatomy, Military Medical Academy. From 1889 professor, Chair of Surgical Pathology and Therapy, Kiev University.
1896- 1909 head, Scrum Department, Kiev Bacteriological Institute. Specialized in surgical infections, tuberculosis and rhinosleroma. 1893 prepared anti-cholera serum and 1894 anti-streptococcal serum in the laboratory he established at Kiev University.
First Kiev physician to use anti-diphtherial serum. Addressing 1st Pirogov Congress of Physicians, stressed need for independent chairs of microbiology (bacteriology). Company-founder and first director, Kiev Bacteriological Institute.
1886 carried out first Russian research on microorganism in the air. 1887 postulated idea of bacteriotherapy of infections (treatment of anthrax with Bacterium prodigiosum preparations). Instrumental in disseminating bacteriological knowledge in Russia and Ukraine.
1894 founded in Kiev soc for combatting infectious diseases. Wrote over 100 works.
