Aleksandr SMIRNOV, USSR Surgeon. Doctor of Medicine Science since 1913; Honoured Worker of Science Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic since 1943; Professor; Head, Chair of Hospital Surgery, Leningrad Sanitation and Hygiene Medicine Institute, since 1936. Order of Lenin; Order of Patriotic War; two Order of Badge of Honor; medals.


SMIRNOV, Aleksandr was born in 1886 in Kazan.


Studied at Physico-Mathematical Faculty, Kazan University. 1910 graduated St. Petersburg Military Medicine Academy, now Kirov Military Medicine Academy, Leningrad. Specialized at Professor S. P. Fedorov’s Academy Surgical Clinic, St. Petersburg.


Since 1912 member, since 1937 Deputy Chairman, Pirogov Surgery Society. 1937-1944 Learned Seer, of the Institute. 1940-1946 Dean, Therapeutic Faculty, 2nd Leningrad Medicine Institute.

Member, International Society of Surgeons. Board member, All-Union and All-Russ Society of Surgeons. Member, Editor Board, journal “Vestnik khirurgii im.

1.1. Grekova” (I. I. Grekov Bulletin of Surgery). Honorary member, Leningrad Pirogov Surgery Society and Leningrad Society of Urologists. 1939-1946 Deputy, Leningrad City Soviet.

1914 at military hospital for critically wounded. 1915-1918 Head, Clinical Department, S. P. Fedorov’s Clinic. 1919 supemumary lecturer, 1921 lecturer, Hospital Clinic, Petrograd Military Medicine Academy.

1925-1933 Head, Chair of Faculty Surgery, Voronezh Medicine Institute. 1933-1935 Head, Chair of General Surgery, Moscow Oblast Clinical Institute. 1942-1945 Head, Surgery Department, evacuation hospital, and consultant, various hospitals in Leningrad.
