Lived in the Crimea. Close to Glazunov. Winner of Glinka Awards in 1908-1910 and 1912. After the October Revolution 1917, conductor of a choir.
From 1924, lived in Erevan, the capital of Armenia. Was at the centre of musical life in Armenia. After his death, his name was given to the Armenian Theatre of Opera and Ballet.
