In 1897, graduated from the Mikhailovskoe Artillery School. In 1903, graduated from the Academy of the General Staff. Fought in 1904-1905 Russo- Japanese War. Company commander and staff officer, 3rd Army. During World War 1 attached for special assignments to chief of staff, Supreme Commander in Chief.
From July 1915 commanded 6th Finnish Infantry Regt. From January 1917 commanded separate naval div. From July 1917 chief of staff, 5th Army.
1918 joined Red Army. 1918 chief, All-Russian Main Staff. Chairman, Commission to Study and Utilize the Experience of the 1914-1918 War.
Professor, Frunze Military Academy and General Staff Academy. Wrote numerous works on strategy, tactics and military history. Arrested by State Security organs.
