From 1919 professor, Moscow University. 1946-1956 also director, Institute of the History of Material Culture (later Institute of Archeology), Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1946-1950 head, Chair of Medieval History, Academy of Social Sciences, Central Committee, All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
1949-1950 chief ed, journal “Voprosy istorii”. Specialized in medieval history of Western Europe. Also studied ethnogencsis of Eastern Slavs.
Proceeding from North.Ya. Marr’s Japhetic theory, he regarded the formation of the Eastern Slavs as the result of a protracted and uneven process of mutual penetration and acculturation of various tribes. 1950 criticized for these views and dismissed from his post as head, Commission for the Ethnogencsis of the Peoples of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
Also dismissed as head, Chair of Medieval History, Academy of Social, Sciences, Central Committee All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) and relieved of his post as chief cd, “Voprosy istorii”. Subsequently revised his views on the ethnogencsis of the Eastern Slavs.
