1913 graduate Faculty of History and Philology, 1924 Oriental Faculty, Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1925 worked at State Academy of the History of Civilization. From 1928 also worked at Hermitage Museum. From 1935 professor, Leningrad University.
From 1937 associate, Institute of the History of Civilization (now Institute of Archeology), Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. From 1945 directed Sogdiana-Tadzh (now Tadzh) archeological expedition. Specialized in history of Centr Asia and Middle East.
