1909 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Mining Institute.
1921-1940 professor, Leningrad Mining Institute. From 1933 worked for Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Carried out geological and petrographical surveys in the Urals, Kaz and the Caucasus.
From 1931 studied active volcanoes in Kamchatka and extinct volcanoes in Armenian 1932 studied ultrabasic eruptive rocks on Mount Ray-Iz in the Polar Urals. 1937 studied alkaline rocks in Berdyaush Pluton.
1939 studied alkaline rocks in Ilmen’ Mountains. Developed geometrical method of analysing composition of rocks with the aid of diagrams, thereby laying the basis for a new branch of sci — petrochemistry. Improved universal-optic method using thin microsections.
