During World War II, member of the Soviet Air Force. Became involved in the human rights movement. His satirical work Ziiaiushchie Vysoty was published abroad and created a world-wide sensation, 1976.
Emigrated, 1978. Settled in West Germany. Described himself as a ‘homo sovieticus’, and had deep insights into his chosen subject.
