1889 defended doctor’s thesis on the effect of ligature of the ductus thoracici on nitrogen exchange in dogs. 1908-1921 in charge of Naval Medical Service. Abolished vodka ration on naval vessels, campaigned against venereal disease, designed a shipboard steam sterilizer and published a 3-volume report on the Russian Navy during the 1904-1905 war with Japan.
1918 joined Red Navy. Organized incorporation of Naval Medical Service into Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic People's Commissariat of Health. 1918-1920 head, Vencrological Section, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic People's Commissariat of Health.
