When Aleksandr Vasilyevich was ten years old, he won for the first time at the school's crossbar pull-up competition. Two years later he participated in the Voronezh gymnastics championship. In early 1976, 18-year-old Aleksandr Vasilyevich made his debut at the national championship (team competitions).

Aleksandr Vasilyevich was one of the world's strongest gymnasts between 1977 and 1981. In 1977 he performed for the first time a gymnastics element on the Horizontal Bar, which was later named Tkachev after him and became one of the most popular and impressive elements, frequently used on international gymnastics competitions. In 2005-2006, he coached the Girls' Compulsory Program at Peninsula Gymnastics in San Mateo, California.

In 1979, Aleksandr Vasilyevich won a gold medal at the European Championships on the crossbar and a silver medal on all-around. In December 1979, in the American city in Texas, he won 2 silver medals on bars and crossbar, and 2 bronze on floor exercises and rings. At the 1980 Olympics, Aleksandr Vasilyevich won an Olympic gold medal on bars and a silver award on rings. In May 1981, at the European Championships in Rome, he got the title of absolute champion and won a gold medal on crossbar exercises, a silver one on bars, a bronze medal on floor exercises, and on rings.
