In 1962 Macijauskas completed Kaunas Secondary School in Kaunas, Lithuania. From 1976 to 1977 he studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Marxism-Leninism.
From 1956 to 1967 Aleksandras was a worker in a machinetool plant in Kaunas, Lithuania. In 1967 he became a photojournalist for the Evening News in Kaunas, Lithuania. He held this position until 1973.
