1920-1953 professor Department of Pathological Anatomy, 1st Moscow University (from early 1930’s 1st Moscow Med Institute). From 1920 director, Institute of Pathological Anatomy, Moscow University. From 1924 dean, Med Faculty, 1944-1951 director, Institute of Normal and Pathological Morphology, USSR Academy of Med Sciences.
1924 Institute of Pathological Anatomy, Botkin City Hospital, Moscow, named for him. From 1927 Board member, 1st Moscow University. Also member, State Learned Med Council, Learned Council, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and USSR Ministry of Health, Higher Certification Commission and Committee for Award of Stalin Prizes.
In his latter years Presidium member and vice-president, USSR Academy of Med Sciences. Founder and chairman, Moscow Social of Pathoana- tomists. Member, many other sci soc in USSR.
Member, German Social of Pathologists and Polish Academy of Sciences. From 1935 founder and chief ed, journal Arkhiv patologii. Co-ed, Bol'shaya meditsins- kayai- entsiklopediya (Large Medical Encyclopedia).
Founded major school of pathological anatomy. More than 500 sci works written under his supervision. Wrote 105 works which shed new light on pathological anatomy of tuberculosis, tumors of the muscular tissue, osteodystrophia fibrosa, etc.
First accurate description of histogenesis of pulmonary tuberculosis (1914). First proof of histogenetic link between rhabdomyomas and Purkinje’s cells of the heart (1909). Established affinity of edema neonatorum with fetal cachexia (1910).
Ascertained origin of primary atrophy of the cerebral cortex (1912). Established possibility of ascertaining chemical action of lipoids microchcmically (1912). Gave histological explanation of calcification (1914).
Proved identity of bone lesions in adult scurvy with Barlow’s disease (1916). First to pay attention to various pathological processes in the sympathetic ganglia (1921). Proposed classification of palhoanatomical forms of pulmonary tuberculosis (1923).
Discovered new type of muscle tumor - myomas from myoblasts (1925, 1931). Established pathoanatomical features of oleogranulomas and ascertained their pathogenesis (1927, 1931). Confirmed the independence of reticuloendotheliosis (1927).
