1893 graduate Moscow Philharmonic College. 1894-1898 further training as a singer in Italy under A. Buzzi (Milan) and V. Vieggine (Naples).
As opera singer began in Italy where he stayed until 1901. Then sang at provincial Russian theaters in Yekaterinoslav, Simbirsk, Tambov, Khar’kov, Odessa, et cetera From 1907 in Moscow; People's Center (1907-1913), Zimin Opera Theater (1913-1915), Bolshoy Theater (1915-1919).
His great experience of stagecraft and good schooling enabled him to give successful performances opposite leading European singers such as M. Galvani, Titta Ruffo, et cetera From 1905 teaching work in Moscow. From 1940 professor, Moscow Conservatory'.
