From 1890’s began to collect material on history of Russian theater. In 1894 founded private lit and theater museum (later exclusively theater museum) on basis of this collection. 1913 turned over museum to Academy of Sciences.
From 1918 chairman, Museum and Archives Section, Theater Department, People's Commissariat of Education. 1918 Moscow Theater Museum was named after him and he was appointed its director for life. A great connoisseur of the theater, especially the Russian theater, he arranged numerous theater exhibitions.
