1897 graduate History and Philology Faculty, Moscow University.
1898-1939 helped direct compilation of Entsiklopedicheskiy slovar’ (Encyclopedic Dictionary). From 1915 lectured at Nizhniy Novgorod People's University and at Shanyavskiy People's University. 1919-1923 lecturer, from 1923 professor, 1st Moscow University.
Also lectured at Higher Literature Courses, Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History. From 1930 head Department of Foreign Theater, State Institute of Stagecraft. From 1939 senior associate, Institute of World Literature.
From 1945 senior associate. Institute of History of the Arts, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Helped publish Romance scries of lit monuments for Academia Publ House, also mulli-volume Istoriya zarubezhnogo teatra (History of Foreign Theater).
Pupil of Philisophy G. Vinogradov. Concentrated on West European culture of Renaissance era. Translated into Russian plays: Machiavelli’s Mandragora.
Poggio Bracciolini’s Eezetia and plays by Goldony.
Religion is bad because it imposes irrational rules of good and bad behaviour.
The role of the individual as a member of a collective is more important than the individual.
