KALEDIN, Aleksey was born in 1861.
1914-1917 commanded cavalry div, army corps, then 8th Army on Southwestern Front. May 1917 removed from command of 8th Army by Brusilov for opposing new democratic trends in army. 30 June 1917 elected ataman of Don Army and head, Don Army Government.
November 1917 refused to recognize Soviet regime and proclaimed autonomy of Don Oblast. When the Soviet regime attempted to subdue the Don area by force, he joined General Alckseyev’s Volunteer Army. Late December 1917 became member, of triumvirate (Alckscycv, Kaledin and Kornilov) which directed the anti-Soviet campaign in southern Russia.
11 February 1918 resigned as ataman of the Don Army, convinced of the futility of further resistance after the Volunteer Army’s withdrawal from the Don.
