KRONTOVSKIY, Aleksey was born on March 12, 1885 in Penza.
1911 graduate Medical Faculty, Kiev University.
After graduate worked under Professor V. K. Lindeman at Chair of General Pathology, Kiev University. 1917-1921 associate professor, from 1923 professor, Chair of Bacteriology, Kiev University. 1923-1924 head Chair of General Pathology, Kiev University.
1924 retired to devote himself to full-time research at Department of Experimental Medical, Kiev Bacteriological Institute and Cancer Department and Department of Experimental Biology which he organized at Kiev Roentgen Institute. From 1925 co-founder and ed, journal "Archiv für experimentelle Zellforschung, besonders Gewebezüchtung,” Jena. Member, International Social of Cytologists and various Soviet science society
Did research on the comparative and experimental pathology of tumors, the pathology' of heredity, the physiology of regeneration and the effect of x-rays and bacterial toxins on tissue growth. Devised improved method of studying tissue cultures outside the organism. Apart from studying the morphological development of tissue cultures developed several exact physiochemical and microchemical observation techniques.
These made possible to study cultures of tissues which are not subject to volumetric growth (the gray matter in adult animals, etc) and led to the discovery of several features of the vital activity of the cells. Helped to establish that any normal tissue deprived of the body’s regulating influence begins to display metabolic features typical of malignant tumors. Wrote some 80 works, including five monographs.
