After graduate speialized under V. V. Pashutin at Chair of General Pathology, Saint St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy. 1893 defended doctor’s thesis on human heat generation in a state of relative rest in which, by the use of direct calorimetry on healthy individuals and feverish patients, he established that the generation and emission of heat and gas metabolism undergo various changes related to the waking and sleeping states and independently of the ingestion food. Did research abroad under Professor Bauman in Freiburg and Professor Ziegler in Baden.
1899-1942 head, Chair of Pharmacology, 1906-1929 head, Training Department, Saint St. Petersburg Women's Medical Institute (1st Leningrad Medical Institute). 1900-1929 also read courses on general and physical therapy at this institute Together with A. Studenskiy, established the heat fixation laws of rigor mortis.
Thgether with P. Avrorov, did research on enhanced gas and heat metabolism under the influence of alcohol. Helped to develop equipment for measuring oxygen consumption in research on the gas metabolism of animals. During World War 1 organized special laboratories for the study of chemical weapons.
1921-1930 founder-head, Chair of Aviation Hygiene, Leningrad Institute of Communication Engineer. 1923 resumed study of chemical weapons. 1926, together with M. P. Nikolayev, made comparative study of the efficacy of testicular preparations.
1933-1942 head, Chair of Pharmacology, Leningrad Pharamceutical Institute. Established a laboratory for biological drug evaluation at Leningrad Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research Institute. Founder-chairman, Leningrad Social of Physilogists, Pharmacologists and Biochemists.
