1918-1930 worked at Antiquities Archives (now Centr State Archives of Ancient Records). From 1919 also lecturer, Moscow University. 1922-1929 secretary, Russian History Section, Institute of History, Russian Association of Social Sciences Research Institute.
1930-1935 head, Sciences Bibliography Section, All-Union Lenin Library. 1935-1942 associate, then department head Anthropology Museum, Moscow University.
1939-1941 also lecturer, Moscow Institute of History, Philosophy and Literature. 1942-1953 senior associate and head, Section of the History of Feudal Russia, then deputy director, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1943-1946 associate professor, 1946-1956 professor, Moscow Historical Archives Institute.
1953-1963 head, Section of Source Research and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1963 retired on pension but continued to work at Centr State Archives of Ancient Records. Specialized in the socio-economics and political history of 17th-Century Russia.
