Acker attended Pepperdine University and was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the last pick in the second round (60th overall) of the 2005 National Basketball Association Draft.

He was assigned to the National Basketball Association Development League"s Fayetteville Patriots on February 27, 2006. From 2006 to 2008, Acker played for Olympiacos (2006-2007) for whom he averaged 14.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists and for Football Club Barcelona, averaging 6.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 30 games. On September 29, 2008 it was announced that Acker had signed a deal with his former team, the Detroit Pistons.
On February 16, 2009, Acker was traded by Detroit to the Los Angeles Clippers along with a second round draft pick in 2011 National Basketball Association Draft in exchange for a conditional second round draft pick in 2013 National Basketball Association Draft.
This trade was completed primarily for the Pistons to clear salary cap space and to open a roster spot for trade flexibility. In May 2009 Acker was featured in an America Online Sports report by National Basketball Association Correspondent Elie Seckbach sharing the story of his journey.
In August 2009, Acker signed a contract with Olimpia Milano in Italy. In September 2010 he signed with Le Mans.
In October 2012 he signed a one-year contract with Asseco Prokom Gdynia.
In February 2013, he signed a 2-month deal with Boulazac Basket Dordogne. On May 2, 2013 he signed with ASVEL Basket. In June 2013, he signed a one-year deal with Limoges Center for Security Policy. On October 25, 2014, Acker signed with İstanbul BlackBerry of Turkey.
On December 29, 2014, he returned to France and signed with his former team ASVEL Basket.
