Education
Studied at Aberdeen University (Master of Arts, with 1st class in Mathematics, 1883).
Career
Lecturer in Mathematics, NainiTal College, North-Western Provinces, India, 1884-1885. Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Aberdeen, 1887. Entered Hong-Kong Civil Service, and attached for one year to the Colonial Office, 1887.
Bacon Scholar, Gray’s Inn, 188S. Passed examination in Chinese, 1890.
Has served in following offices in the Colony — Superintendent, Victoria Gaol, Assistant Colonial Secretary, Registrar-General, Postmaster-General, Colonial Secretary, and Treasurer.
Confirmed in last appointment, 1898, with seat ex officio on Executive and Legislative Councils.
