Akhpolov graduated from the Zhdanov Leningrad State University in 1983, his major subject was Political Economy. In September 1973 became a pupil of a turner at the Ardonsky Mechanical Repair Plant. Speaks English.
Akhpolov worked as a turner of the 2nd rank. He served in the ranks of the Armed Forces of the USSR from 1974 to 1976. In August 1976 Akhpolov returned to his native factory where he worked as a turner of the 2nd and 3rd categories (until August 1978).
