Hood is the son of Rowland Hood, 3rd Viscount Bridport and Sheila Jeanne Agatha van Meurs. He is a descendant of William Nelson, 1st Earl Nelson, elder brother of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté. He succeeded his father in the viscountcy in 1969.

After the Sorbonne, Bridport joined the investment company Kleinwort Benson based in London, before going on to Chase Manhattan Bank and with it moved to Geneva in 1985 to be General Manager of Investment Banking. He was appointed Managing Director of Shearson Lehman Brothers, New York, in 1988. Count Luca Rinaldo Contardo Padulli is a current Director at Bridport & Cie South America which is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
Lord Bridport married Linda Jacqueline Paravicini on 5 January 1972.
They had a son, the Honourable Peregrine Alexander Nelson Hood (b 1974). Lord and Lady Bridport were divorced in 1979.
Lord Bridport married secondly Nina Lincoln (widow of Formula 1 Driver Jochen Rindt) on 5 December 1979. Peregrine Alexander Nelson Hood (b 1974), who is married to Iranian-American Serena Nikkhah (b 1983).
She is currently the Executive Fashion Editor at British Vogue.
