Alexander was born on the 29th of November in 1801, in Makarievskie Prityki Varnavinsky district, Russia.
He graduated from the Kostroma Theological Seminary in 1827, and the Petersburg Theological Academy in 1831.
In 1829 he became a monk. Inspector and professor of theology of the Kaluga Theological Seminary (1831-1832). Inspector of the Petersburg Theological Seminary (1832-1840), simultaneously rector of the Alexander Nevsky Spiritual School.
