He was born at Kharkov, Russia (now Ukraine), the son of Michael and Anna (Gantz) Saslavsky.
He was trained as a violinist by Gorski in Kharkov, and later by Jakob Gruen in Vienna. In 1893 he was graduated from the Vienna Conservatory of Music.
During 1893 he made a concert tour of Canada, and then went to New York City, where he became the violin of the New York Symphony Society. In 1903 he became concert-master and assistant conductor under Walter Damrosch. On one occasion in 1911 he took the orchestra to Spokane, Wash. , for a five weeks' engagement and conducted two concerts daily.
In 1904 Saslavsky was one of the organizers of the Russian Symphony Orchestra, and for four years acted as its concert-master, until he resigned because of the conflict with his duties as concert-master of the New York Symphony Society. He settled in Los Angeles, Cal. , in 1918 and the following year became concert-master of the newly formed Philharmonic Orchestra of that city. He remained in California until his death in San Francisco.
In 1906 and 1907 he organized two string quartets. He spent his summers in the Northwest, giving chamber-music concerts in Denver, Colo. , and other cities. He often appeared as a soloist, both in recital and playing concertos with orchestra.
