In 1878, Alexander Andreevich graduated from Vyatka men's gymnasium and entered Saint Petersburg University. As a student, he wrote the first article on the problem of the so-called "long mounds". He graduated from the Historical and Philological Faculty of Saint Petersburg University in 1882.
In 1882-1892, Alexander Andreevich was a teacher of Russian language and literature at Vyatka Mariinsky women's gymnasium. Since 1892, he was a member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission, since 1909 was a private associate professor, head of the Archaeological School of Saint Petersburg University.
On the invitation of the famous historian and art critic Anisimov, Alexander Andreevich gave lectures on archaeology at Novgorod men's normal school. Further scientific and research activities of Alexander Andreevich were also closely connected with Novgorod. In the summer of 1911, he took part in the XV All-Russian Archaeological Conference held in Novgorod.
Since 1914, in addition to the general course on Russian archaeology, he gave lectures on historical geography at the Imperial Petersburg Institute of Archaeology. Since 1919, Alexander Andreevich was a research officer at the Russian Academy of History of Material Culture.
Alexander Andreevich Spitsyn devoted his entire life to Russian archaeological science. He was a true scientist of great knowledge and creative abilities. He is described as an extremely modest, simple, and friendly person who set himself very high standards.
Alexander Andreevich was married to Elena Aleksandrovna Spitsyna.
