Background

Williams, Alexander Elliot was born on March 12, 1875 in Linden, North Carolina, United States. Son of William L. and Mary Eliza (Elliot) Williams.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1898, Army War College, 1923.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant infantry, 1898. Advanced through grades to colonel, detailed brigadier general Quartermaster Corps., 1920-1921. In Santiago campaign, 1898, and in Cuba until 1900.

In Philippines, 1900-1902. Detailed in Quartermaster Corps., 1907, and in charge water transportation in Philippines. Quartermaster Militia Bureau, Washington, 1916-1917.

In charge depot at Montoir, France, 1918-1919. Detailed as chief quartermaster 3d Army, 1919, and went into Germany. Assistant to quartermaster general, Washington, 1919-1922.

At War College, 1922-1923, Field Artillery School, 1923-1924. Chief of staff, 82d Division, 1924-1926. Quartermaster duties, 1926-1930.

Handled pilgrimage of War Mothers, New York, 1930-1931. Appointed assistant to quartermaster general for 4 years from 1931, with rank of brigadier general.
