Apprenticeship under late Thomas Mudd, Member of Institution of Civil Engineers, at Central Marine Works, Hartlepool. After apprenticeship entered Durham College of Science, obtained Bachelor of Science degree with honours, and was awarded 1851 Research Scholarship. Entered M‘Gill University for one year’s research upon steam-engines, and passed another year in similar research at Newcastle.
Chief Technical Assistant at T. Richardson and Sons, engineers, Hartlepool, 1897. Chief Lecturer in Engineering at Battersea Polytechnic, 1898. Appointed to assist in designing the engineering equipment at Manchester School of Technology, and on completion of this work Lecturer in Engineering.
Professor of Engineering, Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College since 1905. M. I. Mech.E.
