Alexander Lvovich graduated from the School of Guards Warrant Officers and Cavalry Junkers in 1838.
Alexander Lvovich Potapov served in the Life Guards Hussar Regiment (1835-1846, 1848-1849). He was an Aide-de-camp (1856). In the years 1860-1861 he was a Moscow Chief of Police, Chief of Staff of the Gendarme Corps and Chief of the 3rd Division of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery (1861-1864). Alexander Lvovich was an Assistant of Vilno, Kovno, Grodno and Minsk Governor-General from 1864 to 1865. In the years 1865-1868 he was the Ataman of the Don Cossacks, in the years 1874-1876 was the Chief of gendarmes and the Chief of the 3rd Division of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery. Alexander Lvovich was an Honorary Magistrate of Zemlyansky district (1871-1876).
