Student Lehigh University, 1908-1909. Graduate West Point Military Academy, 1913. Student British General Headquarters Machine Gun School, September-December 1917, General Staff College, 1924-1925, War College, 1930-1931.


Colonel, 1935; temporary rank of brigadier general, 1941. Major general, March 1942. Became commander United States Forces on Guadalcanal, December 1943.

Returned to the United States commanding Desert Training Center. Then commander IV Army Corps, California. Commander 7th Army, Allied invasion ground forces, Southern France, August 1944.

Commander 7th Army, March 1, 1944, Lieutenant general August 7, 1944. Brigadier general (permanent), October 1945.
