Lieutenant Gordon Highlanders, 1883. Captain 1893; served Eastern Soudan, 1884, present at battle of El Teb (medal, clasp, and Khedive’s star). Retired from army, 1895.
Has received the Royal Humane Society’s silver medal for saving life from drowning. ViceConsul at Odessa, 1891. Acting Consul at Batoum, 1891-1892.
Transferred to Sebastopol, 1892. Consul - General for the Governments o Poland, Kovno, Grodno, Minsk, and Vilna, to reside at Warsaw, 1897. Received the Jubilee Medal, 1897.
Served with 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders South African War, 1899- 1901 (severely wounded). Operations in the Orange Free State, including actions at Iioutnek (Thoba Mountain) and Zand River. Operations in the Transvaal, including actions near Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Operations in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria (despatches, Queen’s medal with three clasps). A member of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England. Consul-General for the Republic of Hayti and its Dependencies, and also Consul-General for the Dominican Republic, 190S.
