Having the title of Honored Master of Sports and having graduated from the school of coaches (1951), in 1958 Alexander Semenovich entered Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism (SCOLIPE). In 1963 he received a diploma of higher education and successfully defended his thesis "System" 1+4+2+4 in the development of Dynamo Moscow.
His first appearance in the big all-Union arena was a sensation. It was in 1938, when Alexander Semenovich was just 20 years old. In his first season, scoring 19 goals.

In 1951, when he was already 33 years old, Ponomarev moved to Shakhtar. In April 1958 he headed the youth team of the USSR, established for the first time. In 1963 Dynamo Moscow, coached by Ponomarev at that time, won a gold medal.
In 1964, Alexander Ponomarev was awarded the title of Honored сoach of the USSR for the success of Dynamo Moscow and for his contribution to the development of modern tactics in national football.
In 1965 Ponomarev was the first national coach to come to work in the western country - in the Finnish club "Upon Pallo".
In 1969-1970 Ponomarev worked as a coach in Ararat Yerevan, and, admittedly, laid the basis of the team, which three years later became the champion and winner of the USSR Cup.
In 1971 Alexander Semenovich became а coach of the USSR Olympic team. A month later, a small Olympic team of the USSR under the leadership of Alexander Ponomarev won the bronze medal in Munich. And in the fall of 1972 the USSR national team started the fight in the World Cup qualification. The team was to hold two away matches. The first match in Paris, it lost to the French 0:1 and left for Dublin. This was the last game of Alexander Ponomarev.
Alexander Semenovich scored 152 goals in the games of the USSR championships. With this record, he headed the symbolic Grigory Fedotov Club for almost 30 years.
