Converted to Methodist Episcopal Church, circa 1836. Joined African Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, 1840, licensed as exhorter. Assistant on Princeton (New Jersey) circuit, 1842, taught at small primary school, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Admitted on trial at Philadelphia Conference, 1843, ordained deacon, 1845, elder., 1847. Transferred to Baltimore Conference, 1848. Pastor chs., Washington, District of Columbia and Baltimore, 1848-1864 (except for 2 years).
Organized Ebenezer Church, Georgetown, District of Columbia, St. Paul’s, South Washington, Allen Chapel, Good Hope, Maryland. Member all general conferences, 1848-1864, served as assistant secretary. Prepared and published (with 2 others;) new edit. of Discipline, 1860.
Elected bishop, 1864, organized Virginia, Georgia and Florida conferences, supervised district which included Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and California, 1872. Made several journeys to Pacific Coast. Chaplain at unveiling of Lincoln Memorial, Springfield, Illinois, 1874.
